Studio settings reference

Every control in the TopoStack studio, with its range, default and the output type it applies to.

Lengths are listed in millimeters; the studio shows inches when Imperial is selected. Layered or Flat marks a control that appears for one output type only. Controls marked Regenerate need Regenerate terrain before export; all others update the preview on their own. Headings follow the panels in the studio's sidebar rail; Find a setting at the top of the sidebar jumps to any control by name. For how to use them, see the studio tour.

The project name is in the top bar, and the output type sits just below it.

Terrain layers / Contour design

The Terrain panel.

ControlRange or optionsDefaultNotes
Vertical exaggeration1–10×, in 0.1 steps2×Layered. Updates automatically and rounds to whole sheets, with a minimum of two and no upper layer cap. The studio shows the applied value.
Material thickness0.5–25 mm3 mmLayered. With exaggeration, sets the layer count.
Contour linesOn, offOnFlat. Off engraves only map details, water and marks.
Contour density4–40 lines12Flat. Lines across the elevation range.
Index contourEvery 2–10 lines5Flat. Every nth line is drawn heavier.

Minor contours0.05–1.5 mm0.16 mmFlat. Line width.
Index contours0.05–1.5 mm0.32 mmFlat. Line width.

Map features

The Features panel. Its line weight presets, Fine, Balanced (default) and Bold, set every line width in the project, including those in other panels. Widths in this guide are the Balanced values; each ranges from 0.05 to 1.5 mm. A feature's width and style settings appear under its switch when it is on.

Water fillNone, Lines, Ripples, DotsNoneFlat, with water outlines on.
Water depthOn, offOnLayered. Carves lake and sea floors into the stack.
Depth exaggeration0.25–4×, in 0.05 steps1×Layered, with water depth on. Relative to the terrain's vertical scale.
Limit depth layersOn, offOff (automatic)Layered. Automatic coverage adds depth sheets without compressing land relief.
Maximum depth layersPositive whole numberCurrent required depth sheets when enabledLayered. Explicit allowance below the lowest land; saved with the project.
Fit lake depth to available layersOn, offOffLayered. With an explicit depth-layer limit, compresses over-deep lakes into the allowance instead of flattening their floors.
Maximum depthPer lake, from 1 mPublished estimateLayered. Shown for modeled lakes with a depth estimate. Reset restores estimates.
Acrylic water insertsOn, offOffLayered, with Water depth on. Cuts each lake's shoreline out of the sheet that carries its waterline and exports a fitted acrylic insert for it, as separate acrylic files with their own sheet layout. The sheet below gets a 2 mm ledge for the insert to rest on, and map detail over the water is engraved on the acrylic. Lakes on the bottom sheet, and arms narrower than 3 mm, stay wood. Each lake can be switched back to wood in the list below the switch.
Acrylic thickness0.5–25 mmMaterial thicknessWith acrylic inserts. Thinner than the wood sits just below the shore; thicker stands proud of it, with a warning.
Acrylic kerf0–1 mmLaser kerfWith acrylic inserts. Full kerf width in acrylic; half is applied to each side of an insert's cut.
Fit clearance0–0.5 mm0.1 mmWith acrylic inserts. Gap left between each insert and its wood opening on every side, so it drops in without forcing.
Water paint templatesOn, offOffLayered. Adds a paper stencil SVG beside each panel with visible water, cut to the piece outline with windows over the water that stays visible after assembly, so you can spray paint it without colouring the land. Needs water outlines, which are fetched even with Water outlines and Water depth off. See water paint templates.

Socket depth1–30 mm6 mmTerrain seat depth; a backing sheet may be required.

Airspace uses Vertical exaggeration from the terrain settings. Changes rebuild the preview; changing the map area requires fresh terrain generation. The settings summary reports the generated pieces, levels, height and rods.

Minimum feature0.2–5 mm0.8 mmPieces, holes, and short lines smaller than this are removed. Contour detail stays the same at any setting, so raising it clears specks without coarsening the outlines that remain.

Material-saving nestsOn, offOnLayered. Cuts upper layers from covered parts of lower sheets.
Glue margin2–25 mm8 mmLayered, with nests on. Covered glue area kept around nested pieces.
Puzzle seam tabsOn, offOnLayered, when split. Cuts covered seams as interlocking tabs so each piece only fits its neighbour.
Assembly labelsOn, offOnLayered, when split. Engraves each piece's id, such as L03-B2, where the next layer hides it.
